Casini was voted to become the new Serie A president in the month of March of 2022, following the resignation of former president Paolo Dal Pino.
Casini is a lawyer and professor with years of experience at the Collegio di Garanzia dello Sport and various other institutions. The hope and goal for Casini it to reunite the league following a difficult few years for Italian Football.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Casini gave us a little insight about his thoughts on the Serie A, the European Super League project (pushed mainly by Real Madrid´s president Florentino Perez) and which his favourite football club in Italy is.
“The Super League has been seen as a divisive issue, when it (actually) deserves the involvement of all clubs.
“From a purely personal point of view, I see the reasons that to vision it, in Italy and in other countries, but a reform of this type cannot be designed without carefully evaluating all the effects on the entire system.”
The new Lega Serie A president then touched on the pros and cons of a closed-league system.
“From my experience in the United States, closed leagues have pros and cons. It is not by chance that the NBA adopts corrective measures such as the draw, the exchange of players and other compensation mechanisms.
“However, we need to talk about it as part of an overall reform process, otherwise it’s a rush forward that only risks dividing people.”
Finally, Casini discussed if he was a big Juventus fan following some rumours.
“I was until March 11, 2022. Now I’m a fan of Serie A.”
Juventus are one of the three clubs who are still reportedly pushing for a European Super League project to move ahead, alongside Barcelona and, as mentioned above, Real Madrid.
